Director of Community Engagement Huron Pines Gaylord, Michigan
Lake Huron is an ecological treasure for the United States and Canada, tribal governments, and the bordering provinces and states. It has the longest shoreline among the Great Lakes, is home to the first-ever freshwater National Marine Sanctuary, supports billions of dollars in shipping, and is a main economic driver for the shoreline communities that depend on outdoor recreation to draw people to their areas. It is the source for drinking water in many surrounding rural communities.
Lake Huron Forever is a multinational partnership among Michigan, Ontario, and tribal nations that is led by Huron Pines, a regional NGO. It identifies planning strategies to protect Lake Huron's water quality, unique and rare natural communities, and quality of life and integrates those strategies into municipal planning processes. Learn how the Lake Huron Forever model has been applied in Alpena, Michigan, and the specific tools and steps taken that moved from early conversations with local officials to implementing a suite of green infrastructure projects in prominent public locations - all driven and prioritized by direct input from the community.
