Zoning for a City That Moves: Unlocking Potential

The phrase, "The subway is the lifeblood of New York City" could not be more true. The subway lines that run under, above, and through the country's most populous city are the only thing standing between its success and complete gridlock. However, much of the system lacks full accessibility, creating a barrier to equitable transit. Meanwhile, 2024 marked two successive years of population growth. Housing construction has not kept with demand, resulting in persistent affordability challenges in many city communities.

Representatives from the New York Department of City Planning and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority discuss how they united to craft policy and implement projects that simultaneously address systemic challenges of transit accessibility and inadequate housing.
