Traditional mixed-use neighborhoods championed by new urbanism are highly sought after. They can offer a more sustainable, inclusive environment. Getting the balance right to realize those benefits requires collaboration, attention to details, and dedication. The vision must balance stability with flexibility to remain relevant and vibrant as conditions change.

Initial plan development can jeopardize the success of these projects more than a typical, market-reactive, suburban development's. Throughout development, plans and codes are challenged by opportunities, constraints, political environments, and market forces.

Use insights from decades of experience with one of Michigan's earliest and largest new urbanist developments to craft durable, adaptable plans and codes. Apply its successes and challenges to work better with developers and local officials to facilitate a sustainable, inclusive project.

Experience new public-space improvements, developed in coordination with an experienced planning firm and the local government, to establish a town square that can be programmed year-round with community activities and events that foster a sense of place and encourage commercial activity. Examine what went well, (e.g. a greater variety of housing and mobility options), and what you can do better, (e.g. promoting affordability and transit).
