Matt is founding Principal of CAST architecture with a focus on creative infill housing as the nexus of low-carbon living, walkable neighborhoods, affordabilty and social policy. CAST's housing portfolio spans single-stair stacked flats, custom residential, backyard cottages, pre-approved plans, affordable housing, historic preservation, and mixed-use projects. He has consulted with jurisdictions on how to reduce bureaucratic barriers to allow more middle housing. In addition to his design work, he speaks publically the impact of zoning on housing design, accessory dwelling units, and stacked flats.
He is Co-Chair of the Seattle Planning Commission, and led AIA Seattle and the Seattle Design Festival in 2024-25. He was the AIA National Strategic Councilor for Washington State from 2022-25. In 2017, he co-founded MOAR (More Options for Accessory Residences), a grassroots organization that helped pass Seattleās 2019 landmark ADU reform. Seattle Magazine named Matt one of the 35 Most Influential People in 2019. He has taught design studios periodically at the University of Washington.
Matt jalso is a middle housing developer-recently completing a build-to-lease sixplex in Spokane, Washington. He started a local knowledge sharing group inspire more architects to take the lead in building housing themselves.
