Senior Advisor - Neighborhood Economic Development
City of Detroit
Detroit, Michigan
Martha has been working in the field of economic development for the past 15 years. Her focus is on the impact of small business, infrastructural investment and community development in making commercial corridors vibrant, attractive places to live, work and play. Most recently, Martha joined the Jobs and Economy Team (JET) in the Mayor’s Office to focus on neighborhood economic development.
In her current role, Martha helps shepherd projects seeking to (re)activate commercial spaces throughout the City of Detroit. She helps developers and small businesses, who are often one and the same, access the resources they need to build a strong development vision and financial model for their project. She then helps manage the process through closing, collaborating closely with her colleagues who offer financing and white glove service on permitting, licensing, etc.
Martha also works closely to tee up public and private property for redevelopment, helping the City identify catalytic structures and using a number of economic development tools to ensure that sites are prepped and ready for redevelopment. This work is in partnership with place-based community development corporations and business associations, who Martha believes are the backbone of neighborhood economic development work in Detroit.
