April Surprenant is Manager for the Strategic Services Group at SSFM International, leading planners in community planning, resilience and sustainable planning, transportation and traffic planning, and environmental planning. With over 30 years of experience, she integrates her background in planning, architecture, and real estate to align disciplines with project and situational needs. She serves as Vice President of the APA Hawaiʻi Chapter, a board member of the Hawaiʻi State Hazard Mitigation Forum, and a member of Lambda Alpha International Aloha Chapter.
For over 15 years, April was Manager of Long Range Planning for the Hawaiʻi County Planning Department and served one term as Deputy Planning Director. She oversaw the Coastal Zone Management Program, natural and cultural resources planning, the islandwide General Plan, regional community development plans, transportation planning, and long-range initiatives. She served on the County’s Leadership Recovery Team after the 2018 Kilauea eruption and was Co-Chair of the Hazard Mitigation Plan Working Group, and a 10-year member of the State’s Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Commission.
Since 2011, she has been an adjunct professor at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo, teaching planning courses focused on land use, community engagement, and sustainability. She enjoys swing dancing, hiking, and cooking.
