Silvia brings more than 32 years of experience advancing planning practice, strengthening civic discourse, and empowering communities. At Calvin, Giordano & Associates, she oversees Planning and Zoning for multiple municipalities and has led award-winning comprehensive plans, visioning initiatives, and placemaking efforts across the U.S. and internationally. She began her career in Monroe County, Florida, as a development review planner and later served as Parks and Recreation Planner. Moving to the private sector, she rose to senior leadership at WRT Planning & Design before founding Silvia E. Vargas Community Planning, a consultancy that helped local governments and nonprofits design and implement creative, equitable community engagement and planning processes. A longtime APA leader, Silvia will be the next AICP Commission President after serving on the APA Board of Directors. She previously chaired APA’s Welcoming Environment Task Force and the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee. As an AICP Commissioner from 2016–2020, she chaired both the College of Fellows and Exam Committees and was inducted into the AICP College of Fellows in 2020. Silvia holds a B.A. in Architectural Studies and a Master of Urban Planning from the University of Kansas and serves on the KU School of Public Affairs & Administration Advisory Board.
