Tanya M. Washington, AICP, is Director of the Prince William County Planning Office for the second largest county in Virginia, near Washington, DC, and one of the most diverse in the nation. Since 2024, Ms. Washington leads Prince William Planning’s innovative planning services for redevelopment and greenfield development and walkable, multi-modal communities in this rapidly growing county. She oversaw the development of the County’s Affordable Dwelling Unit Ordinance, adopted in June 2025. Formerly as Tanya Stern, she served as Acting Planning Director of the Montgomery County, MD Planning Department from 2022 to 2023 and as Deputy Planning Director for over 4 years. She was a key advisor for Thrive Montgomery 2050, the General Plan for Maryland's largest county, and oversaw implementation of Montgomery Planning's Equity in Planning Agenda. Ms. Washington served for 14 years in the Government of the District of Columbia, at the DC Office of Planning as Deputy Director overseeing neighborhood planning and urban design and as Chief of Staff; in the Executive Office of the Mayor; and in other agencies. Additionally, she has 11 years of non-profit sector experience. Ms. Washington holds a master’s in city planning from the University of Pennsylvania and Certified Public Manager certification.
