Shari C. Williams, MUP, is Director of Equitable Neighborhood Planning at Detroit Future City, where she leads planning strategies that connect community voice, equitable development, and systems-level collaboration across Detroit’s neighborhoods. With over 15 years of experience in urban planning and community development, her work focuses on translating engagement, research, and practitioner insight into actionable planning and policy approaches.
Shari’s practice explores how equitable engagement can move beyond participation to inform real decision-making, investment strategies, and implementation. She has written and presented on these approaches, contributing to conversations that help shape planning practices within Detroit’s civic and development ecosystem.
She has served on the Michigan Association of Planning Board for six years, including as President in 2025 and currently as Past President in 2026, and serves on the Executive Board of Michigan Black Planning Professionals, supporting leadership development and representation within the profession.
Shari holds a master’s degree in urban planning from Wayne State University and a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary social science with concentrations in economics and public policy from Michigan State University. Her work centers on practical, collaborative approaches that strengthen communities and advance more inclusive planning outcomes.
