Sam Butler is the executive director of Doing Development Differently in Metro Detroit (D4), a nonprofit dedicated to promoting equitable development. Sam has a Master of Urban Planning from the University of Michigan and has nearly 20 years of experience leading Detroit-based community development projects. D4 is a dynamic organization that conducts policy research, leads civic education, and helps community groups negotiate community benefit agreements (CBAs) with developers. Sam is a published author on CBA best practices and has monitored the Detroit Community Benefits Ordinance since its inception. Some of Sam’s recent work focuses on expanding opportunities for residents to co-own private sector development projects and testing these models through several pilot initiatives.
