Planners frequently use GIS tools to analyze, share, and explain complex information. Yet without thoughtful design, these tools can unintentionally exclude users, especially those with disabilities, lower data literacy, or limited digital access.

This interactive Learning Lab introduces Human-Centered Design and Engineering (HCDE) principles that ensure visualizations are not only accurate but also intuitive, inclusive, and actionable. Explore common accessibility barriers in data visualization, then apply HCDE techniques to critique and redesign real-world examples for greater clarity and impact.

Through hands-on activities, learn to:

• Improve map and dashboard usability for diverse audiences;

• Apply accessible color schemes, labeling, and layouts;

• Integrate community perspectives into technical products; and

• Align visual design with planning equity goals.
