Improv(E) Your Way to a Yes!

Planners spend much of their careers in the spotlight. Whether presenting a zoning application at a public hearing or making a recommendation for a development code update or housing initiative, planners are on center stage. To get support and buy-in from appointed and elected officials, we must acknowledge that most community planning issues, such as zoning and housing, are political issues, especially during election season. Improv can elevate our game and provide us with tools to embrace the political chaos and come out successful.

Improv demonstrates how to use active listening to be ready for unexpected questions and redirect the discussion. It also shows how to turn negative statements at public hearings into a positive responses to the speaker. You are likely practicing some form of improv already and don't even realize it. Using improv can enhance proposals, build political capital (relationships), and get the Yes! you are striving for. Explore the world of improv through energetic discussions and exciting exercises and put these tools to use with real-world scenarios.
