The Joe Louis Greenway emerged in the context of post-bankruptcy Detroit. Challenges included an eight-mile rail corridor, a growing cultural divide between downtown and the neighborhoods, and decades of disinvestment. Throughout the planning process, the City of Detroit pursued an inclusive, multilingual, community engagement strategy to build trust and create a collaborative vision. The 29-mile greenway is bringing quality public space and multimodal transportation infrastructure to some of Detroit's most disadvantaged neighborhoods.

Approximately $220 million dollars have been raised for construction, and 15 miles of the greenway are scheduled to be complete by the end of 2026. Explore how the city navigated complex issues of land control and varying rights of way while maintaining the initial design standards. Understand the extensive regional collaboration necessary to implement the project across municipal boundaries and diverse neighborhoods.

The Joe Louis Greenway Framework received APA's 2022 Advancing Diversity and Social Change in Honor of Paul Davidoff Award.​
