Common planning tools such as single-family zoning, municipally codified definitions of "family," expansive minimum private-lot sizes, and other such publicly created policies, can lead to geographic and community isolation and exclusion. Mile after monotonous mile of individual dwellings on individual lots works against fostering community and keeps people from engaging with neighbors who may live very differently, perhaps reinforcing stereotypes by maintaining separation. Commercial and industrial uses are not immune.

Planners are perfectly situated to turn the ship in terms of using land use policy to reconnect community (and communities) and offer greater choice in ways of living. Talk with queer communities to determine needs and preferences that can be reflected in land use. Redefine "family" to include all types of configurations and modify policies to allow them to succeed. Recognize elements of physical communities manifested through land use policies to foster LGBT concentration as desired.
