Michael Frisch, PhD, FAICP. Associate Professor and Program Director, Urban Planning + Design, Division of the Natural and Built Environment, School of Science and Engineering, University of Missouri - Kansas City. The UMKC Urban Planning + Design program is a professional undergraduate program emphasizing physical planning, political economy, and urban design producing capable entry-level planners for the profession.
Michael Frisch's research examines how urban planning interacts with LGBTQ communities. In March 2026, he published a chapter on "LGBTQ -Inclusive Urban Design" in the Routledge Handbook of Urban Design Practice. He is well-known for his paper " Planning as a Heterosexist Project." His presentation on this tour will be heavily influenced by his 2021 work on "A Queer Reading on the US Census" available online at https://link.springer.com/chapter/10.1007/978-3-030-66073-4_3. His look at Detroit shows a drift to the suburbs and a return to the city in the last 50 years.
